Why booking direct is better - in 2026

The EU banned wide parity clauses in 2024. Hotels can finally reward you for going direct.

For fifteen years, a single clause kept the industry frozen in place. Every hotel, from a Parisian boutique to a Tokyo five-star, had signed it - promising the big travel sites that no one, anywhere, could publish a lower rate. That clause died in June 2024.

What happened next was quiet. Independents dropped their direct prices 15-25% overnight. Chains created member rates - free to join - that landed 10-20% under the OTA. Luxury properties didn't move on rate but started folding in €50-€200 nightly credits, breakfast, upgrades, welcome gifts: things the OTA physically couldn't pass to you.

If you're new to direct booking, these are the things everyone wonders.

What exactly does DirectStayz do?
It's a Chrome browser extension that adds one thing to your favorite travel site: a button saying "Reserve directly on [hotel-name].com". That's it. Click it, land on the hotel's real site, book with the same dates. Nothing else changes in your workflow.
How much will I actually save?
Typical savings are 10-30% of the room rate. Independent hotels (the ones hit hardest by commissions) often show the biggest discounts. Large chains discount less on rate but make up for it with points, free breakfast, and upgrades.
Is it legal? I heard there used to be a rule against cheaper direct rates.
Yes - and that rule is gone. In June 2024 the EU banned wide "price parity" clauses under the Digital Markets Act. Hotels are now free to publish lower direct prices. That's the entire reason DirectStayz works so well now.
Does it cost me anything? What's the catch?

What about cancellation and customer service?
